Where is my beloved?

24x51in
Oil on canvas

"Where is my beloved?" is not just a visual experience but an emotional journey, capturing the spiritual and ephemeral beauty of Krishna's dance with the Gopi’s. It invites the viewer to lose themselves in the colours, to feel the movement and the stillness, the longing and the fulfilment, and ultimately, the divine love that transcends the dance.

The painting captures the viewpoint of a Gopi searching for her beloved Krishna among the other Gopi’s and their colourful attire. As her eyes scan the bands of swirling colours, the chaos at the edges of the canvas gradually gives way to a more harmonious and calm convergence towards the centre where he stands. This journey through the dance is depicted with a sense of movement and urgency, as if the viewer is weaving through the Gopi’s, their colourful clothing blurring together in the motion.

And then, amidst the vibrant chaos, time seems to pause. The colours around Krishna soften and blend, creating a halo effect that contrasts with the intensity of the surrounding bands. This subtle shift in the flow of colours captures the moment of revelation, when the Gopi's searching eyes finally rest upon Krishna and as if time has suddenly stopped. The viewer can feel the Gopi's awe and adoration, the overwhelming joy of finding her beloved in the midst of the dance.

The horizontal layout of the painting emphasises the expansive nature of the Raas Leela, the divine dance that seems to stretch beyond the boundaries of the canvas. Yet, amidst this vastness, Krishna remains the anchor, his presence a beacon of serenity and divine love.
